The 32-year-old practised kicking the ball to a trainer, while he also tested his shooting technique by hitting balls that had been placed on top of cones into a goal.

Messi was sorely missed against Bilbao, while the injuries suffered by Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele have made Barcelona’s situation even worse.

Barcelona’s next game is at home to Real Betis on Sunday, with Messi facing a race against time if he is to be fit for that fixture.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has yet to resume training with the Barcelona squad, but may target the game away to Osasuna on August 31 for his comeback.

During the summer Messi featured for Argentina in the Copa America, meaning he was late to return for pre-season training.

After getting injured in training, Messi has endured a frustrating time and it seems clear that Barcelona need the forward, who scored 51 goals in 50 games last season, to help improve their fortunes.
